Somewhere on the edge of the world, in the far and frozen north, lived the snowmen. And since all they needed was cold and snow, the number of snowmen was always increasing. As happens in life, and in our story, a bigger snowman decided to become king over the snowmen. Since no one had anything against it, the snowman took the name of King Snowman I and ruled over the snowmen for many years. But as the snowmen multiplied, King Snowman encountered a big problem: there were so many snowmen that there was no more room in their kingdom. Since they were already at the edge of the world and could no longer go north, under the leadership of the king, the snowmen set off south, to the land of people, where the sun warmed the earth, the grass was green and carrots and peppers grew that the snowmen bought to make their noses. Until then, there had been peace between people and the snowmen in the north, but now, war was imminent.
After a long march, the snowmen encountered their first big problem. The lands where the people lived were warm and slow, the advance of the snowmen hordes was stopped. Seeing how many of his subjects were melting because of the sun and the warm earth, the Snowman King decided that the snowmen should return to the snowy north and bring with them a lot of snow in their arms. The Snow King also ordered his subjects to breathe as one as they advanced south, thus sending the cold air exhaled from their snow lungs forward. And they repeated this movement many times. Every time the snowmen returned north to bring more snow, the sun tried to melt the snow, but its power decreased. Over and over again, the snow-covered territory expanded southward. Finally, the snowmen succeeded and covered the entire earth with snow and ice. The sun no longer had the power to warm it… the snowmen had a whole world of their own.
As everything was covered in snow, vegetables stopped growing, animals disappeared, and the few people who resisted retreated to caves where it was warmer. At first, the snowmen were happy, they had everyone, they could multiply freely… But their joy was short-lived. Once everything was covered in snow, the peppers and carrots used for the noses were no longer to be found. Then, the Snowman King realized the mistake he had made and ordered the snowmen to retreat back to the north and leave a large enough territory for the people who grow carrots and peppers. This period was called the Ice Age. This is how the weather changes… at the end of summer, the snowmen set off from the north to the places occupied by people, they come to buy peppers and carrots for the noses of the new snowmen. With them comes cold weather and snow, and after they have done their shopping and return to the frozen north again, the sun begins to warm the earth again.
I made this story up one November evening 8 years ago for my daughter. She was at the age where she wanted me to make up bedtime stories for her.
