Theoretically, I’d heard of the chaffinch before — but until now, I’d never actually seen one.
Anyway, that’s not really the point. The thing is, this little bird turned out to be one of the hardest I’ve ever tried to photograph. It’s ridiculously restless — never still for a second.
Since I haven’t posted anything in the Birds category for a while, today I finally managed to capture a few shots of this chaffinch. The chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is supposedly quite common around here. Honestly, with all the birdlife buzzing around in summer, I probably just overlooked it.
Now that the migratory birds have left the country, it’s likely much easier to spot — maybe also because the leaves have fallen and everything’s more visible.

And since I’d already photographed it, I thought I’d look up a few facts about the species. That’s when I came across something quite interesting:
In this part of Europe, the chaffinch is partially migratory. The males stay here for the winter, while the females and young birds migrate to North Africa or Southwest Asia.
So basically, the male chaffinch toughs it out here in the cold — like a little penguin with feathers.
Anyway, with a bit of patience (and a lot of chasing), I managed to add one more bird to my Birds of Romania list. Unfortunately, I’m updating that list much slower than I’m taking new photos.
But no rush — as I always say, winter’s long.
On another note, I’ve realized why I post these bird articles so rarely: my laptop was full of photo folders waiting to be edited, so I bought an external hard drive. Now I download everything straight there — and honestly, sometimes I’m just too lazy to go fetch the pictures from it.
